Week 7

Number and place value:

The big ideas:

This week looked at number sense, numeration, mental computation, number and place value.

Reys et al. (2020) state that place value is critical to understanding and representing numbers and number systems.
Number knowledge can be defined as formal ideas related to numeration and place value.
Numeration - The ability to name, write, read and interpret numbers. Numeration skills refer to mental computation. To undertake mental computation, the student should understand concepts of operations, organise thinking, know basic number facts to process the information. This is developed when children use their own language and develop strategies.

Personal reflection:
A new idea for me was that understanding place value is necessary for computational algorithms of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be learned in a meaningful way (Reys et al., 2020). This then will ensure that I place focus on students having a solid understanding of place value so they may progress in other mathematical areas.

Concept, skills and strategies:

A possible misconception:
A likely misconception would be a student not understanding the use of a place holder, because we do not say zero when saying the number. Example: A student may write three hundred and 9 as 39 as the zero is not spoken. To remedy this, the student should engage with place value mats.

ACARA:
Place value: Year one / Number and algebra / Number and place value / ACMNA014
Elaboration:
  • Understand partitioning of numbers and the importance of grouping in tens
  • Understanding two-digit numbers as comprised of tens and ones/units
Scootle resource: The importance of zero https://education.abc.net.au/home#!/media/2006751/ count collections to 100 by partitioning numbers using place value

Resources:
I remember have this place value flip stand in my classroom when learning place value. It was a useful resource, and one I will use in my teaching.
